Frequently Asked Questions

  • What type of music do you teach your students?
    • Anything and everything! Students are encouraged to choose their music preferences. I specialized in classical music but welcome all types of piano music. I want my students to study the type of music that motivates them to practice!
  • What do lessons consist of?
    • Sight-reading and proper playing technique are the basis for all students’ lessons. Students study solo piano music as well as duets with me or other students. All students are encouraged to create their own music through composition, and many students choose to enter their original works in contests.
  • Do you do recitals?
    • Yes! Two recitals are held per year. While not required, recitals give students the opportunity to showcase their skills to friends and family. Recitals are also a great motivator for practicing!
  • Does my child have to practice every day?
    • At least 5 days of practice per week are needed in order to progress on the piano. Amounts of practice time vary from student to student, but in general, beginners should spend 15-30 minutes/day, intermediate students should spend 30-45 minutes/day, and advanced students should spend 45-90 minutes/day.
  • My child complains about practicing sometimes…should we discontinue?
    • Studying an instrument requires as much commitment from you (the parent) as it does from the student. Some days your child will not feel like practicing because learning new things and working through difficult passages in music is really hard! (I don’t like practicing, either!) Providing consistency in a practice schedule will give your child less to fight about (i.e., pick the same time of day to be designated as “piano time”). Many parents include piano practice as a part of homework time.
